What is the Navamsa Chart?

A complete guide to the D9 divisional chart in Vedic (Jyotish) astrology

The Chart of the Soul

The Navamsa chart — also spelled Navamsha and abbreviated D9 — is one of the most important tools in Vedic (Jyotish) astrology. While the birth chart (Rashi or D1) shows the outer circumstances of life, the Navamsa reveals the soul's deeper nature, dharmic purpose, and the quality of significant relationships, especially marriage.

How is the Navamsa Calculated?

Each zodiac sign is divided into 9 equal parts of 3°20' (three degrees and twenty minutes) each. These 9 segments are called Navamsas or padas. The sequence of signs assigned to each pada follows the element of the natal sign: Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) begin their Navamsa sequence from Aries; Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) from Capricorn; Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) from Libra; and Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) from Cancer.

Key Concepts in Navamsa Analysis

  • Vargottama: A planet in the same sign in D1 and D9. Considered extremely strong.
  • Pushkar Navamsa: Specific auspicious degree ranges. Planets here give doubly benefic results.
  • Atmakaraka:The planet with the highest degree in D1. Its D9 sign (Karakamsha) reveals the soul's deepest desire.
  • D9 Dignity:A planet's exaltation, own sign, or debilitation in D9 modifies its effects in marriage and dharma.
